This heater is *not* designed to heat a whole room. Instead it is designed to heat the occupant of the room. It’s parabolic design provides a great deal of directed heat. From 8 to 10 feet away, the heater keeps a person comforfortably warm. We have a family room that sits on a concrete slab and has 3 outside walls… it’s difficult to heat the entire room even with radiators, baseboard heaters etc. and turning up the heat in the house makes the rest of the house too hot. The heatdish allows our family to watch TV in comfort without having to heat the whole room.

The Presto Heat Dish was EXACTLY what I wanted. It was humorously situated in a display in a local warehouse where amazed patrons walking laterally in the path 15′ away would turn to see where the sudden heat was coming from! They sell out of this every year! I sit at my computer in the living room which is an open 25′x25′ and there’s no WAY any other space heater would be effective EXCEPT if i light a fire in the fire place. And that’s the best comparison for this unit’s radiant heat. I stay toasty warm and yet not too warm because I’ve turned down the main thermostat. It’s perfect. And it’s amazing! No, it’s probably not for a bedroom while sleeping, but … Further points: It is TOTALLY SILENT. not like the now-old Quarts Tube heaters that jar you awake at any setting other than High. It has an infinitely variable heat adjustment that works well … It will cycle on and off, but the glow wires don’t cool off as fast and can maintain the desired amount. It looks cool when it’s on high and glowing orange, but you do not need it on “high orange” to feel heat. If you get this, you won’t be dissapointed. It’s fun. I’m not convinced the price posted here is the best price.
The unit is also very light, so we often take it with us when we travel. The negatives are that the price seems to be climbing, although as I said, our model is still going strong after all this time. It was definitely worth the price and I will buy another when the time comes. Another negative is that (like most space heaters) you cannot sleep with it on, unless you can stand the heat coils lighting up and turning off every few moments. I took out the lightbulb in the base because it was not necessary for us, but I can see how it would be useful.
This is a great little heater and works exactly as I expected. It puts out a good steady stream of heat to one focused spot and does not take long to heat up. It is uses 1000 watts on full blast, so is very inexpensive to operate regarding electricity cost. I have seen 2 common complaints on other reviews. One is the light burns out after about a year. Like many others, I did not want a night light that large on all the time when the heater is on, so I disconnected the bulb. No problem for me. The second complaint I have seen several times is that after a period of time, the somewhat loud buzzer will go off even when the heater is not tilted or knocked over. In my experience, this seems to be caused by too much build up of dust, on the heatdish itself. With it turned off, and unplugged, I have directed a hair dryer at it, and removed about 90% of the dust in less than 10 seconds, even when a lot of dust had built up on it. Guess what? When I have done this the buzzing stopped when it was not supposed to be going off. Unlikely you will find a better heater than this for the price, for it’s designed purpose.
comments, My house is not well insulated. I have 20′ ceilings downstairs, where I spend most of my evenings, and high ceilings in my upstairs office. Running the furnace during these cold winter days does little to make me feel warm and most space heaters feel too puny trying to heat such large spaces. What I needed at is known as a parabolic dish reflector heater. Despite some overly-zealous descriptions, these heaters are not space-age technology. My great-grandmother had a parabolic dish reflector heater more than 60 years ago. Due to Costco’s active in-store displays every year, Presto seems to be by far the #1 model. The selling price has risen to a ridiculous 70 – 100 dollars for something that must only have about 5 bucks of materials in it. After reading many reviews (see rebuttals below), I decided this was the right choice despite several logical negatives. Pros: It works. The night before I bought it I shivered and was cold to the bone. As soon as I set it up the two of us sitting about 7′ apart in front of the TV felt a comfortable warmth.
